gdesklets problems with xcomposite

So I enabled the xcomposite option, and I have the composite extension enabled in my xorg.conf file and I have xcompmgr installed and working, but the translucency doesn't work. The applets backgrounds are just black, I would post a screenshot but I don't know how to. I would disable this option but I lost the trayicon and can't get back into the configuration menu of gdesklets. This is really annoying and I would love to get this figured out. Thanks for any help.
