gDesklets Launch With Enlightenment

Heyas,

I boot straight to the command line and then manually type in startx to launch the X Server. I am trying to get gDesklets to launch when Enlightenment does and from my understanding I need to use the .xinitrc file in my home directory to do this. I am not sure how to set up the .xinitrc file though. This is what I have so far, however when Enlightenment starts up gDesklets does not start until I manually start it.

Here is my .xinitrc:

gdesklets start &
exec /usr/local/enlightenment/bin/enlightenment

Perhaps someone else can see what I am doing wrong and point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Chris

I've finally figured out how to startup any program (not just those that you can right-click -> Remember) from Enlightenment. I feel like I've pored over every inch of the internet trying to figure this out, to no avail, until I just finally got it.

What you need to do is edit the .enlightenment/...e_session-XXXXXX.snapshots.0 file. This is the file that records all of the "Remember" attributes for a window.

Basically, you need to add an entry for gdesklets or rox or whatever program you want (make sure there's not already one there, otherwise modify that one). For the example of gdesklets:
Code:
NEW: gdesklets
NAME: gdesklets
CLASS: gdesklets
CMD: /usr/bin/gdesklets start
Now you need to restart Enlightenment. DO NOT use the log out command though, this will overwrite the changes you just made. You have to use the middle-click, restart Enlightenment (or you can make the aforementioned changes from outside E).

Just to help out anyone else, I also have rox and aTerm working this way as well. The following automatically loads a transparent aTerm console with no scrollbars and a rox pinboard for displaying icons.
Code:
NEW: aTerm.XTerm
NAME: aterm
CLASS: XTerm
CMD: /usr/bin/aterm -sl 1000 -tr -sh 70 -fg white +sb

NEW: ROX-Filer.ROX-Filer:/home/yourname
NAME: ROX-Filer
CLASS: ROX-Filer
CMD: rox --pinboard=MyPinboard
Hope that helps.

Scott

Just because I'm proud of myself, here's a screenshot from right after Enlightenment loads... gdesklets, desktop icons, and all

http://www.theskyiscrape.com/scott/screenshot.jpg

I've only been running linux for a week now and so far I"ve tried out Gnome, Fluxbox, and Enlightenment for FC2, as well as SuSE.. and I hafta say that I'm by far the most satisfied with E.

Very nice.

I was wondering, how do you get desktop icons? Also, at the bottom right of your screen those 3 icons there, are they just iconified windows or are those quicklaunch icons?

chryzmo - i was using ROX for the icons.. it's something called a ROX pinboard that allows you to put icons. There are also some gdesklets that allow you to have icons (like the psi launcher - http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ca...&gd_app_id=170)

dslboy - the psi sensors/displays allow transparent backgrounds, give them a shot.
