Gdal or some way to fill in blank spots in data

Hi all,

I'm working with image maps that have white holes of pixels missing from processing.

I can't figure out the most efficient way to automatically fill these holes in - gdal_fillnodata.py seems to do nothing. Do you know of any ways to smooth them out?

I'd like something nice and F/OSS like gdal, but have access to Photoshop and other proprietary tools if necessary.

Thanks!

Could you post one of the bitmaps in question?

Here's an example of one with white spots within the terrain that I want to have blend in
