GCC problems

Ok I have been having alot of problems compiling I finally figure out I didnt have gcc installed, so I got it installed, and I am still getting this error.

field@linux:~/Downloads/gaim-0.75> ./configure
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... no
checking for sed... /usr/bin/sed
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

any idea whats wrong?

which distribution are you using? it sounds like either you dont have linux-headers installed or some other part of the gcc libraries, check around the same place you got gcc and look for lib packages to go with it
