GCC issues on SuSE 9.1 Personal

I'm trying to use a prewritten makefile that's meant to compile the Asterisk PBX system. I'm running SuSE 9.1 Personal. Whenever I run the makefile, it gets partway through -- everything works until it tries to run GCC. At that point I get the following error message:

checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.

I have tried using an RPM to update GCC, trying to get an update through YaST, and nothing works. GCC seems to be there, because YaST says it's installed, but I can't get it to work. Can someone help?

I don't believe that Suse 9.1 personal has gcc. If you want to use gcc then you need to either upgrade to 9.1 pro, suse 9.2, or go download gcc yourself and install it.

If I were you, I'd go get the 9.2 suse from the bittorrents and then you'll have gcc and whole bunch of more stuff.
