gcc (error on fresh debian)

I've got a clean install of Debian Woody running and can't intall many apps without gcc. I used apt-get install gcc (and gcc-3.0), but it still won't work. Here is some output if that helps, but I'm stuck.

# gcc -v
gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)

# gcc test.c
/usr/bin/ld: cannot open crt1.o: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Thanks in advance.
