GCC Compilation Trouble

I am having trouble configuring GCC. I need it for several programs and I have been trying to get it to work to no avail. Here is the error code I get after typing ./configure :

[root@localhost gcc-3.4.2]# ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
./configure: line 2332: cc: command not found
*** The command 'cc -o conftest -g conftest.c' failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.
[root@localhost gcc-3.4.2]#

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

setenv

try typing: CC=gcc
and then: export CC
then retry ./configure

Are you using the bash shell?

Actually, it appears that you don't have a C compiler installed (read as 'gcc not installed'). If you did have gcc installed properly, there should be a symbolic link from /usr/bin/cc to /usr/bin/gcc.
