gcc and nvidia installer suse 9.1 64bit

Hi,

I think I may have a common problem but after trawling many threads I can't fine an answer.

I have a dual opteron box with suse 9.1 pro (64bit), kernel 2.6.4.52-mp, and a 6800gt card. I need to install the nvidia driver for this, yast doesn't do the job, so I tried a manual install. The kernel isn't correct so the installer attempts to compile it and this is where I have problems. The kernel source is correct and installed, but I need to install GCC and the other dev tools. I can't do this via yast online update or from the dvd - both just say "error" and abort the installation. No other dev tools can be installed, and I can't upgrade the kernel either.

Any ideas where I am going wrong? I'm hoping this is obvious to an experienced user....

cheers!
