GCC and MySQL
After a week of attempting unsuccessfully to install MySQL I think some of the problems are gradually becoming clearer to me. I'll make this post long-winded so that it might be of use to others.
I'm trying to install the application using the source code distributions. After initially going through the steps to uncompress the download and configure, make and make install as instructed in the many guides on the topic - none of the mysql commands seemed to work.
It's only been since looking in more detail on the MySQL web site that I noticed that they state that there is a problem with some versions of GCC - in particular GCC 2.96 as included in RedHat 7.x distributions. Needless to say I'm trying to install on RedHat 7.3.
The recommended version of GCC according to MySQL is 2.95. Can I safely install an older version of GCC over the existing version or are there any safeguards I should look out for beforehand.
Hope this makes sense.
