gcc-2.95 to compile kernel?

I am in the progress of installing LFS-5.0. The book tells me to install gcc-2.95. It says that gcc-2.95 is what I will want to compile my kernel with. Do most distributions of linux use gcc-2.95 to compile the kernel? When I run the command make bzimage on my slackware or gentoo system, does it automatically look for gcc-2.95?

Several of the gcc versions are probably OK. I've been using gcc 3.3.2 to compile lots of software including various kernel versions with never a hitch.

Do steer clear of 2.96.

2.95 is pretty much fine though...

Nobody and nothing will check your gcc version when you build the kernel. If you picked a gcc that's not-ready-for-primetime, you'll normally find out when compiles fail and programs crash.
