SIRS,
I am a Linux newbie. I use SuSe 9.1 Personal on a Pentium III 733 Mhz.
I have downloaded the gcc-2.95 tarball, and now im stuck because i can not install it.
Im getting error messages such as : $PATH should point to a valid compiler such as cc
I have program sources (setups of programs) that need to be configured and compiled (whatever that means)
I understand that i need gcc for this
I thought about downloading the .rpm for gcc,but as with other rpms, (with whom I had a nasty nasty experience, since one Dependency required another and the next one on another one.......)
So i prefer making, building, compiling gcc (whichever is applicable)
Could anyone point me to a wokable solution? ???
Any help will be totally appreciated.
So you have downloaded the source code to gcc-2.95 ?
you need a compiler to compiler source code.
you cannot compile a compiler without a compiler (confuised ?)
basically, you need to install a compiler from a binary package.
Use the compiler from the suse cd, all its dependency's will be there.
i dont have any experiance with suse, but most distro's have a graphical installer for different package groups. the gcc compiler is in the developement tools package groupe.
Also, is there any reason you are using such an out of date compiler ???
the latest version of gcc is 3.4 (but you only need this for 64bit cpu's)
gcc 3.X will probably be the one on the suse cd's.
Thanks a lot for the info on gcc. I'll try seaching for it on the SuSe 9.1 CD.
My question is : why doesn't it come installed in place? Well I guess, the personal edition doesn't care about the development tools. newbies like me perform fancy stunts (like downloading an outdated version). Anyways I think the forum is a nice place to make life in Linux easier.
Here's a new list of doubts :
1. GNOME is not present in SuSe 9.1. I'm downloading GNOME 2.10 through torrent tracker.
Can I install it permanently afterwards from the LIVE CD ??
2. I use DC++ in Windows XP. Is there a KDE or GNOME equivalent of DC++ ??
3. If not, then how can I connect to other computers in my area (in my city block) ??
Is it possible??
4. Is there a web development environment (like dreamweaver) in Linux?
Well, so much for now.
Thanks and regards.
Rishi
