Garbled text using Joe through Putty

I've used putty to connect to my shared web server for many years, and have always used Joe as my text editor. Never a problem, I'm a fan of Joe. Recently, I started working on a new laptop with Windows 10 loaded. Today, I fired up putty and used joe to view a large text file. On paging down through the file, I noticed that many of the characters in the file were missing. Curiously, this happened mainly around the 18th character on each line (which occurs around the 23rd character or so on the display, due to there being a tab at the 12th character). Using the forward arrow to traverse the text, the text corrects itself; the backward arrow does not accomplish this. Navigating so as to horizontally scroll the display and going back to the original display consistently fixes the problem.
I can't be sure where the problem is, but I don't see the issue outside of Joe. Has anybody seen this before? Any ideas how to fix it?
Thanks,
Rob

I would rather say it is a display refresh issue, not really related to the content inside putty. Probably you need to set/change terminal type in putty, but that is only a guess.

I already hunted around in putty for terminal settings, but none look like they would have any bearing on this issue. And previous times I've installed putty, I've gotten it to work trouble-free "out of the box". Scrolling through regular Linux terminal screens, I don't get the garbling - just with joe.

Looking into this some more, I notice that it's only when editing files with data in tab-delimited columns that the issue seems to appear.
