This is hte best guide I know of:
http://www.jeepster.org.uk/bits/gaim-howto.html

What distro?

Dood I just wasted my time following each step that was listed there (alternative choice of not using Mozilla NSS but GNUTLS instead) and the MSN plugin still cannot connect

Grrrr this blows so much ass

oh well looks like I'll just have to live without it

What the hell is Mozilla NSS anyway ?

Network Security Services:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/nss/

Did it configure ok and say it would support ssl?

well i can give u a short and nasty howto...do this:
go to www.rpmseek.com and get the latest packages nss and nspr packages from there.....and then get the latest gaim package(i did this with gaim 0.71 but i believe .72 is out too). newayz make sure your gtk(www.gtk.org) is upto date. it is is...go into root and do these:
rpm -Uvh nspr-*.rpm(replace the * with the version no.)
rpm -Uvh nss-*.rpm
u shud not see any dependency issues in these two....(i think this is the order...if not reverse them and try again).
once u have done that...try:
rpm -Uvh gaim*.rpm
if that comiles without any problems...gr8.
if you do see some dependency issues...check them...if they do not include nething about nss or nspr or gtk or your gcc version....do:
rpm -Uvh --no-deps(or force....sorry but i dont really remember...ben a while since i did this) gaim*.rpm
and then u shud have gaim working.
hope this helped.
