Gaim is troubling!

I am attempting to start Gaim from the normal launcher in the start menu, nothing happens, but when I try to run it from the command line, I get this:

$ gaim
Gaim has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file.
This is a bug in the software and has happened through
no fault of your own.

Any ideas how to fix it? I've tried other versions of Gaim, been installing and re-installing sveral times with no luck. Currently it's the beta 5 I am trying to run.

Thanks.

http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php

Sounds like the version of gaim you have has a prob. Does your distro have a package mgr like Yum or Yast or Emerge?

Better to use it and install all dependencies.

Otherwise install from source. Get rid of the defective one first. Always best to use a package made for your distro if you can.

I have tried all sources, and even from Synaptic and apt-get. My distro is Debian. Still, going with your directions there are no ways it will work.
