I know it's bad to post a problem as your very first post but this is REALLY bothering me.
I'm running Ubuntu Linux on my IBM Thinkpad, and thought everything was going great. I could e-mail and use firefox, which are 2 of the 3 things I do most. Awesome. The third is go on AIM...GAIM on linux. Naturally, this does not work. Here's the problem:
I'm using 1.0.0 to log onto my AIM screenname. After I log on, while loading the buddy list, the entire thing hangs for about 10 minutes or so...the window doesn't repaint itself, but minimizing and maximizing it work. I assume it's taking awhile to load my buddy list. Got me. Then, after that, every couple minutes it'll do the same thing, for a much shorter time frame...maybe 2 or 3 minutes. This could be when certain people sign on or off, but I see people sign off and on so it isn't when ANYONE signs on or off. I've searched on Google forever, and haven't found anything similar except one problem in an older release...which was fixed. I tried the solution anyway, it didn't work. I'm behind a university firewall, so I tried connecting on port 80...no good. I tried using my Yahoo SN which I haven't used for ages, and it worked perfectly. It's just AIM, and it seems to involve the buddy list. Any ideas?

I did, and Kopete works but it has some annoying problems...you can't talk to people on AIM who are invisible because it shows them as offline(my friends do this a lot), and it doesn't show when someone is mobile(IM forwarding).
Mostly I just want to get GAIM to work, but I give up. It's not meant to be.
I've been using Kopete, it's ok, but like I said...it doesn't show when people are forwarding messages to their phone(it shows them as online) and it won't let me talk to people who used the new AIM invisible thing.
AIM works, but then I need to have both AIM and Kopete open(for Yahoo messenger).
I don't know, no big deal. It's just pissing me off that Gaim won't work.
