gaim and yahoo booters question
Hi all. Well, I've always used gaim on linux to enter yahoo chat rooms. Sometimes I've been sent boots but since I'm using gaim they don't work, but a few days ago, they sent me a boot that made my linux installation get hanged (one oif this boots that open lots of windows from someone adding you to his buddy list). Ok, my quetsion is, is there a way to be fully protected against these boots on linux, whether using gaim or any other program?? Thanks in advance.

What exactly are these "boots"? If you tell me more, I'd be glad to try to help you find a solution.

These yahoo booters are malicious programs that allow other users to flood one person with messages, buzzes, or conversatiopn windows from multiple users so he/she gets disconnected or get his system hung up. They've sent me these boot while using gaim and haven't worked but some days ago they sent me one of these boots that made my Fedoira Core installatin get hung up and I had to reset.

It shouldn't hang up the whole system. X, perhaps, but that should be the absolute limit. I was not aware of these malicious booters on yahoo: better believe I won't be going on that network for a while.
Have you installed the latest version of gaim?

There are antibooters as well. Don't know how much do they do as I've never used one but I know they exist. I could provide you some links but I think it's better not to do it here. Just google for antibooters.

I'm using gaim version 1.0.1-3. I pressed ctrl+alt+tab to reset the X system when I got booted but it didn't work, maybe I didn't wait enough for it to reset, so I reset my pc. But well, I think I'll try the latest version of gaim. Thanks.

Ok, I found a yahoo client for linux that seems to be very good, it even has cam and voice support, as well as anti-boot protection. If someone is interested, here 's the link. The only problem is that it crashes like 2 or 5 minutes after I start it, (maybe a dependency problem). I started it it by the console to see the error messages and this is what I got:
[user@localhost ~]$ gyach
Use of deprecated SAXv1 function endElement
(gyach:5483): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: file gobject.c: line 1561 (g_object_ref): assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
(gyach:5483): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: file gobject.c: line 1561 (g_object_ref): assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
Violación de segmento
[user@localhost ~]$
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

For voice and WebCam support for yahoo messenger you can try gyach :
1. Download http://www.politicalcrossfire.com/te...nstall.tar.bz2 , and save it to your home directory (important!).
2. Run these commands in the terminal, in sequential order:
Code:
tar -xjf gyach-install.tar.bz2
cd gyach
sudo ./install
gaim-vv is another choice

yahoo booters
IF your having so many problems with booters on yahoo using linux or Gaim, try using ymlite as your client when you are chatting. So long as you are chatting on YCHT you are unbootable even by the nasty idiots who enjoy booting and nuking for no reason. when you are using any messengers you should have your pm's off and get yourself ytunnel.
