Gaim & AIM

Newbie to Linux here (managed to get it all nice and running and the INET without any problems so I was all excited), obviously excxited to soon.
I to am having a problem with GAIM and also AIM in Mandrake 10. After I couldn't get Gaim to load I just tried AIM and failed there also. So heres whats going on for Gaim:

I downloaded v0.76 rpm off the web and the first problem is that there is no GAIM for Mandrake 10, so I just got the 9.2 version (not sure if it'll work at this point).
I proceed to download it then run (as root) it

[root@localhost Gaim.v0.76]# rpm -i gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2.i586.rpm
warning: gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 4c292fcc
error: Failed dependencies:
libnss3 is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libgtkspell.so.0 is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libnspr4.so is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libnss3.so is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libplc4.so is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libplds4.so is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libsmime3.so is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libsoftokn3.so is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libssl3.so is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libtcl8.4.so is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2
libtk8.4.so is needed by gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2

any ideas?

for aim: ( i tried with 2 version) this is what happened for the one thats supposed to work under Mandrake

[root@localhost AIM.v1.5.286]# rpm -i aim-1.5.286-1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 is needed by aim-1.5.286-1

and this is for ALL Other Oses:
root@localhost AIM.v1.5.286]# gunzip -c aim-1.5.234-1.i386.tgz | tar xv
./
usr/
usr/local/
usr/local/bin/
usr/local/bin/aim

etc etc etc...
then when i try to run aim...

[root@localhost bin]# ./aim
./aim: error while loading shared libraries: libXprt.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

any ideas?

(Also the only thing i have gotten working right now, software wise, is Mozilla and thats because I just had to copy it onto the desktop and it worked...my question is how can i move it into etc? keeps denying me access, im assuming it has something to do with being root)

You need to install the Development packages (and maybe more) for Mandrake.

you need to do a search on the dependencies which are failing... Before you can install Gaim you need to have otyher programs installed so it will work. The list of Failed dependencies tells you the libraries which you need to install before Gaim will let you install

not sure where you can go exactly, but here's a start...
http://rpm.pbone.net
or
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/

Search for the RPM's which may contain the library, using the name of the library which is causing a dependancy problem (eg: libnss3 ). Then download and install those packages which will provide the library you need.

After installing one of the RPM's you find based on dependancies, try installing gaim again, and see if the list has shrunk. If so, keep searching and installing and trying gaim again until there are no more dep. probs.

hope this helps

ok i ran through a few after downloading a horde of the rpm libraries i manged to get it to stop complaining about dependencies:

root@localhost Gaim.v0.76]# rpm -i gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2.i586.rpm
warning: gaim-0.76-0mdk9.2.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 4c292fcc

see just a warning and thats it, now like where the hell did it go? i did a find for gaim and came up empty (my find crashes almost every time i search thoug...)

oh, and if you type:
> rpm -ivh RPM-FILE

rpm will show you more information.. (v= verbose, h=hash) The hash command will print hash values accross the terminal as a perecentage while you install

in RH the location of gAIM is /usr/bin/gaim

try looking there, but definatly do as jonnycarlos sujested with the rpm -ivh or -Uvh filename.rpm

that always tends to make me feel a little better.

-i for install something new
-U for upgrading something already there.
