Fullscreen Application Problems

Whenever I try to run an application that uses the fullscreen, I get a black background and mouse pointer, and that's it...

Some of the programs that do this are:
Frozen Bubble
Uplink (also a game: http://www.introversion.co.uk/uplink/)
ArmageTron

Anyone know what is happening? Or a possible fix?

I just tried setting my display from 24 bit to 16 bit, and that didn't help.

Changing back to 24 bit did not help. My video drivers and everything is correctly configured, I just started having this problem, fullscreen games were fine about 4 days ago. And no, I haven't changed anything since.

I changed the resolution, and the X server messed up. It took me about an hour to get it working correctly. No, I haven't installed anything.
