Full screen movie in Totem no longer disables screensaver automatically

On a fresh install of Gentoo and creating the first user, whenever I watched a movie in fullscreen mode, I didn't have to worry about the screensaver kicking in. However I created another user, but whenever the other user watches a movie, they have to disable the screensaver through xscreensaver. How was Totem able to disable it automatically before? I'm not sure, but I might have changed the backend from gstreamer to xinelib (or maybe the other way around). I've looked online and couldn't find a solution. And I asked the people on Gentoo's forums and they told me to just use a different player.

Have you checked the settings in Totem to see if it's an option that you can enable? or perhaps check the Totem config file to see if you can manually add that setting?

Oh man, I just realized I made this post and completely forgot to check it. I have perused through Totem's preference settings and couldn't find a way to enable it. I haven't checked the configuration files yet though. I'll try that tomorrow when I have more time. Thanks for the advice.

Nope, nothing in there to indicate that there's a way to disable the screensaver by going into fullscreen mode:

After a lot of searching I came across this:

None of these players disable xscreensaver out of the box. I think mplayer has an option, and xine probably does. But not Totem, as far as I know. So I resort to ~/.bash_profile hackery:

totem() {
xscreensaver-command -exit
$(which totem)
xscreensaver -no-splash &
}

Perhaps you can cut and paste the section above to your home/.bash_profile file and it may work.

Berticus 08-02-2007 03:40 PM

Hmm... That's weird, because I definitely had Totem disable the screensaver once I compiled it. Then I created a new user and it couldn't do it anymore... I'll definitely give that script a try.
