ftp/tcp:unknown services

.I'm trying to use tcp/ip services such as ftp ,network is correctly working and doing ping while when i run ftp as client it is giving following error:

ftp: ftp/tcp: unknown service

I created the file /etc/services
containing the lines
....
ftp 21/tcp
....

I don't understand what's wrong for the getservbyname function call inthe ftp client.
i am using redhat linux with kernel 2.4.25, and i get the template for rescue cd from phenix.bnl.gov

Hi,

You created the /etc/services file or edited it? It should already be there, filled with the correct information for the major services.

If you need to set it up yourself, ftp needs the following entries in /etc/services:

Code:
ftp-data 20/tcp # File Transfer [Default Data]
ftp-data 20/udp # File Transfer [Default Data]
ftp 21/tcp # File Transfer [Control]
ftp 21/udp # File Transfer [Control]
Everything after the # is a comment and can be changed/deleted.

Hope this get you going again.
