you could create a new user (adduser / useradd) and define the homedrive as /var/html/www/blabla
that way the user can logon with his username and password and after some configuration be chrooted inside that directory and have full ownership of it.. since he's the client I think this is something you want.

Ok, this is similar to what I want to do. I am a newbie at linux, but I installed Apache2 webserver and vsftpd server on the Ubuntu 7.10 server distro at school. Im excited to get this thing working the way that I want. Can someone please explain to me in laymans terms how to create an ftp user account that points to the /var/www folder

run 'system-config-users'

- press the add user button

- fill in user name, full name, password

- for the home directory put in '/var/www/html/username' rather than /home

- press OK

well, the server distro in command line only, so I cant do any button clicking. I have tried looking at the man file for the useradd command but I can't seem to get the syntax correct for specifying a user's home directory
