FTP apps keep crashing when I FTP my whole site

I'm trying to back-up a couple of my sites (content managed (php files) , each time I try to ftp the whole site. The ftp program crashes at some point. I have used four different ftp programs on two different computers and none of them seem to work. I think it probably is an error on my server or something configured inncorrectly,

Can some point me in the right direct to what could be wrong

i've been using gftp (i believe you have linux installed since we are in linux forum, as the ftp clients you listed are for windows) and it has the feature to start where it has left while uploading in the case it get disconnected from the server.
