Just built a new development box and installed Redhat 9 on it.

I also have a Redhat 7.3 box running mail and virus protection.

The 7.3 machine has proftpd on it. It was previously set up by an outsourced company.

So here it is....

Should I use proftpd, vsftp, or something else?
I want to us it as a ftp server primarily for uploading and updating the company website located on that machine, secondly for me and select friends/co-workers as a file ftpserver with unique username and passwords setup. NO anonoymous access.

What should I use and how will it be configured. I am a complete to this. I tried to set up my 7.3 (that has proftpd) to be my personal ftpserver but failed and even messed up the ftp side of it that was for the website.

I don't really have your answer but since I hate to see someone's post go w/o answer i looked as the man pages for ftp and ftpd. Now I assume it is going to work on the same principle as ssh(d) in that one needs to config the deamon on the server side and the bin on the client side. I browsed over the those man pages so a more in-depth look will be required by you. That is of course if one chooses to use the straight ftp program that is usually included with most distros. Start with the man pages:
$man ftp
and
$man ftpd
then after you are really confused try to google/linux ftp/ftpd
