FreshClam on Fedora Core 6

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to setup an SMTP Inbound/Outbound email Antivirus scanner server using ClamAV. I'm a Windows System Admin guy and I'm trying to explore the benefits of using Linux as the email gateway virus scanner. I have MS Exchange setup to send and receive email and I want to place the Linux email scanner in front of the Exchange box so all SMTP traffic has to pass through it and get scanned when it does so.

I know how to setup Exchange to use the Linux box as a SmartHost, but I'm new to Linux. I've chosen to install Fedora Core 6, and this appears to be working fine. I've installed it and got it connected to the Internet OK. According to the list of applications, I have ClamAV installed as part of the Fedora package list. If I run clamscan --version I get the following response:

ClamAV 0.88.7/2314/Sun Dec 10 20:02:13 2006

So I believe that some of the ClamAV application is installed. However, when I try running freshclam to perform an update the sytem cannot find the command.

I'd like some assistance in getting FreshClam working on a regular scheduled update (say every 8 hours), but I guess I need to get it installed somehow first? I'd also like to know how to make ClamAV scan inbound & outbound SMTP traffic from/to my Exchange server?

Please can you help me get this working?

I'm a total Linux noob, so please can I have the answers in the simplest terms for total begginers ;-)

Many thanks in advance!!!

Kind Regards,

Greg.

Having exactly the same issue but with Fedora Core 5. Originally installed using "easy installation package" (combined with spamassassin) from mailscanner.info. Just installed clamav using yum -- having no luck. I don't see a conf file in \etc\ either.

Hopefully this works for you -- I think this fixed my issue.

I read that you can list all the packages available with yum by typing: yum list
The list would be too long to read so I directed it to a file: yum list > yumlist
and then used grep to find what clamav modules were available that I didn't have: cat yumlist | grep clamav

So I was missing the clamav-update package. Once I downloaded that I had freshclam

I also downloaded clamav-server for the daemon but I'm not sure if I need that yet.

Awesome!

Thanks so much for your help ;-)

I ran through what you suggested and managed to get freshclam to work now. I think I can follow the instructions now to get it working as I need it to.

Thanks again for your advice, it's really appreciated!

Kindest Regards,

Greg.

Thumbs up Re: FreshClam on Fedora Core 6

Oh, man... this thread just kept me from pulling out my hair.

All I need to do now is figure out the tricks of the config files and I should be rockin' with this.
