frequently gcc errors just recently?

I am getting an error when trying to build source. When i ./configure it gives me a barrel load of errors ending with c++ compiler cannot create executables. What I would like to know, is that because the source is too recent and gcc too old or is there a directory/path problem? I was going to download latest gcc but too big. I have gcc 3.2 in Mandrake 9.0. Is there any devel libraries to urpmi maybe?
