freezing with demanding tasks


im running on gentoo linux and with this distro ive been using for a while i have a problem that i never had with any other. on tasks that dont seem related through software like mencoder or sometimes when compiling. these and other tasks freeze my computer completely. my hardwares fine i have an amd 2800+ a gig of ram and another gig of swap. its to the point where i cant function properly because i want to use these tools. so im coming for help any helps thank you

Tasks which are 'demanding' usually means that the CPU is running at 100% for a long period of time. A freeze in this case usually means that the CPU is overheating. Check that the CPU fan is spinning, and vacuum excess dust from your CPU fan and case fan(s). Make sure there are no obstructions (like IDE ribbon cables) blocking airflow.

These tasks are also memory intensive. You can check your memory with memtest86.

i doubt its a hardware problem because i dont have this problem with a livecd or anything else and when i run these things that freeze my computer my cpu moniter says they are taking 99% but ill check my hardware just in case
