freenet hogging resources

I haven't found an answer to this in freenet's documentation, google, or other sources... just curious if anyone else had experience with it.

I'm running freenet (recent version), and it seems to be hogging more than its fair share of resources. It's not using much CPU or RAM, but it seems to have 100 to 200 processes in use at any given time (along with quite a bit of disk activity). I've modified freenet.conf with:

maxNodeConnections=30
maximumThreads=60

These don't seem to make any difference. I like Freenet (though I don't use it too much at the moment), and want to support it, but it seems to be degrading my machine's performance by running so many threads. My freenet web interface indicates the load at about 85%.

Anyone know a way to make it play nice?
