Frames dropped while playing divx/dvd


i get frames dropped every 15 seconds or so when i play a largish divx file/dvd/vobz...i have an amd thlon xp 2400+ and 1GB of ram, so its not the hardware thats the problem...dma is enabled..

ive tried xine/mplayer...both have the problem...playback is smooth in windows though..

please help..

I've heard of the HAL daemon causing something like this, don't know how or why but try searching threads for more info

disabling hal didnt help....neither did switching back to reiserfs from reiser4... : (

Yeah if it's nvidia I could possibly help, I had choppy video to start with due to both driver issues and a problem with my network card.

sorry fraz didnt help..i tried disabling my network card too...i even recompiled a vanilla kernel..things seem to be *slightly* better with this kernel...but i shouldnt be getting dropped frames at all right?

ok correction: the difference is about 50% with the vanilla kernel...so i guess im on the right track..still not perfect though

Well the problem iI was having is pretty self evident if you log in to runlevel 3. So you are probably all right there.
you could try manually selecting a video codec
use the -vo switch
I used -vo xv
with mplayer
but i suspect your problem runs deeper. I would also check your xorg.conf file to see which video libraries are being loaded etc

hey turns out it was hal! previously i only tried stopping the running service but now i prevented it from starting up at boot and everything is fine..this does not happen in gnome whethere hal is running or not..thanks a lot!
