format issue

I have been trying to recover some old files. I have been unable to locate them on a DVD, and my high capacity drive failed on me. The only other place I know the files should be is a Zip disk. I no longer have a working desktop with a parallel port so I bought a USB to Parallel cable only to find out that that doesn't work. I bought a card with a parallel port, but I couldn't get it to install. I got the PC to notice the card, but it could not find the driver on the driver disk. Someone else tried it, but couldn't even get the system to notice the card. I have been told that a Linux OS could read a Windows formatted Zip disk for the sake of pulling the files. Is that true? I could try to see if a Linux distro will see & install the card, but is there a Linux program that can read PageMaker files? I am not worried about page layout as long as I can recover the text.

You could copy the files to a USB thumb drive and then use them in any OS.

Part of the problem is that the files are on a Zip disk, and I am having trouble getting access to them because I currently don't have a way to use the Zip drive.
