for efax-gtk, which port is my fax modem on?

Hello. How do I figure out which port my internal fax modem is on? /dev/ttyS0? /dev/ttyS1? /dev/ttyS2? Is there a command I can use that will say "your modem is on /dev/ttySnumber"?

Post the output of the command lspci and run the scanmodem tool.
http://www.linmodems.org/

Real MODEMS used traditional serial ports i.e ttyS0 but most likely your internal MODEM is a winmodem. Once you know the type of MODEM you can install the driver and then the device will be created.

From lspci:
Code:
03:00.0 Serial controller: 3Com Corp, Modem Division 56K FaxModem Model 5610 (rev 01)
It is a hardware modem that I've had for some time.

I don't seem to have the program "scanmodem".

The scanmodem utility is typically used for discovering winmodems. You have a real hardware MODEM so it is not needed.

In most cases it should just work. Look at the output of the dmesg command to see if it is being recognised and if a /dev/ttySx is being created.

Thanks for your suggestions michaelk. I did figure it out with wvdialconf: "Found a modem on /dev/ttyS5."
