Fonts look nice in KOffice, ugly in OpenOffice

Finally I have been able to have good looking fonts in Linux (web browsing is acceptable now), but the main problem I have now is with OpenOffice. I'm using Mandrake 10 with a modified freetype library so fonts in general look good. This is the case in e.g. KOffice, where it's comfortable to do some text processing. In OpenOffice 1.1.0 on the other hand, the fonts are a mess. I like Times New Roman, but in Oo it just looks ugly. The strange thing is, it looks fine in KOffice, Mozilla, Opera etc.
I've heard Oo uses a different font rendering engine but they say there is no real work-around. Or is there?

I really don't know myself, but I can recommend the open office forum. The guys there know more open office specific stuff then I do.
