Fonts installed... and yet not

Hi All -

I have a valid Windows license and have been trying to get the core fonts to install in Mandrake 9.1.... of particular importance is Verdana.

The fonts are installed (at least I think they are) - I can access them in some programmes, but not others.

In open office - they aren't in my "list" of fonts available, but if I type the name of the font into the font selection box I get it to work.

Any ideas, hints, tips, wisdom??

I'd love to have verdana working in firefox... but it simply isnt one of the options.

Thanks in advance for all your help!! Apologies for my 'ness

I'm not sure about Open Office but for Firefox, if it's an xft + gtk build it should be enough to copy the font into a hidden folder called .fonts in your home folder. You may need to log out and back in again to make fontconfig update it's list of fonts. http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/fonts2.html
