Fonts in Libranet

Hey all

Well I had heard good things about Libranet, so I thought i'd give 2.7 a shot. I grabbed it, and immediately updated to the latest Debian unstable. My problem is that my fonts look like kak. GTK2 is somewhat acceptable (running Gnome 2.4), but everything in Mozilla is and Epiphany are chunky and blocky. I had this problem with gentoo, but editing my /etc/fonts/local.conf file didn't work this time like it did before. I've also tried tldp.org, various google searches, and all sorts of font beautification howto's. Freetype and xft are both installed, and according to XFree86.0.log, freetypes getting loaded fine. xft is up and running as well, and no errors are given in X's font initialization.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing under Debian? Basically I want to make my fonts look like those in RedHat or Mandrake. Thanks for any help anyone can give.
