Font Settings on XFree86

As root I selected the wrong font size 640x800 in the Gnome GUI /Applications/Desktop Preferences/Screen Resolution.
Now, the resolution is not readable to change it back to 800x600. What files on the command line can be edited to change the resolution? In /root/.gnome2/yelp, the width and height was changed back to 800x600, but this did not change the resolution.

Xfree86 is installed with Debain Sarge 3.1 on a Dell Precision 380 using a Dell Ultra Sharp Flat Panel.

Thanks
