Fluxbox wont load, locks up Xserver insted

hello,

Im using Fedora 10 for my OS and have Xserver along with fluxbox installed.

now when i try and start fluxbox from an xterm it seems to send the CPU mad, and sits doing nothing (xterm outputs 'Setting default value' all the way down then stops outputting)

basicly when i run fluxbox or startflux box i am having to kill xserver or switch to another runlevel and kill fluxbox.

now the strange thing...
when i run pkill flux* and switch back to XServer it accually loads fluxbox then unloads it... umm... sure its just teasing me!

can anyone explain whats going on?

cheers

If I've missed something, please disregard this post.

But, are you saying that you are trying to run fluxbox from another window manager (you mention running it from an xterm)?

If you're using Fedora, you probably have an a login manager like GDM or KDM (if you are running from a graphical login). From there, you should be able to select fluxbox from the sessions menu if you installed it from an RPM. That's how I can do it on my CentOS computer. Also, on my Gentoo machine (not installed from rpm there). As for it going nuts like that, I have no idea. Mine won't let me run fluxbox because it detects the other window manager running and quits.

hi nuwen,

When i installed Fedora i did not install any desktops nor display managers, the reason for this is i didnt want to have to remove them at a later date and do a clean up after them.

I do infact have slim installed but i have not got his setup as yet, even so, if i do set it up, it will only be running the commands that i do.

Understood. Okay. I used to run from runlevel 3. In that case, how I used to run fluxbox was from the .xinitrc in my home directory and just running startx. I think that's the normal prescribed way to do it without a graphical login. I've never tried running from a pre-established X from an xterm. So, I don't know why it's going nuts. Sorry I can't help there.

How are you running an xterm without a window manager? Just from putting xterm in an xinit or something? Not really my business, just curious.

yes xterm automaticly starts as default with xinit when it cant find a DM

and i seem to have resolved the issue, well sort off.

I updated Fedora before I started installing the software i wanted (including fluxbox), so this ment i was running the latest kernel. for some reason fluxbox dose not like starting 'first time' on this kernel, i booted into the org kernel and started it fine, went back into the new kernel and it works as normal as well.

not sure what you will make of this, but it looks like a compat bug.

anyway,

cheers,
Philly
