Fluxbox Start Up
I'm sure this has been asked before but I searched and found nothing.
Is there a way to specify which desktop you want the applications to open in from .xinitrc? I want my browser to open up on the second workspace. Thanks! |
i don't think there is. if there is, i want to know it.
i don't think you could do it in .xinitrc anyway. that would be a window manager command. |
you can edit the "special" or "extended" 'properties' or 'attributes' linked to each app by your modern window manager

[exec] (Netscape Navigator) {netscape -geometry +0+0}
thats a command to make netscape start in the upper left corner. thats as far as i get with positioning commands |
Yeah I know how to postition them on the FIRST desktop but I want them to be able to open up on the second or third desktop.
|
just curious..... y would u want this, i don't get it.........
|
for my self, i would love mozilla starting up loading
a few pages on the second or third desktop when i started my window manager. |
On bootup you could have mail on 1 desktop, net on 2, IM on 3 etc.
Thats what I would want, and I presume thats what he is thinking of. |
Yes, it is possible! :)
Visit Fluxbox's webpage and download fluxbox 0.1.14 together with the 'remember-patch'. Now you can have Fluxbox remembering size, position, workspace etc for all your programs. I'd like to have opera opened on my fourth desktop, sylpheed and ical automatically grouped together on the third desktop. Licq is also opened on the third desktop in a tabless state. |
That means you have to have then in the same position when you shutdown though?
|
I'm not sure what you mean by that...
Do you mean if resizing a program or changing desktop for it, will affect how the program looks the next time it's started? If so, the answer is no. It's possible to change attributes (size/postition/dekstop whatever) and the next time you start the program it will return to it's 'saved state'. Attributes will be remembered as the windows looks when you tell Fluxbox to remember it. You can choose which attributes you want to remember so you don't have to remember them all. For some programs I only want size to be remembered. For others I want size/position/desktop to be remebered or why not sticky state/tabstate. There is also an option called 'Save settings on close' which I believe would give you the behaviour you were asking about. (don't know since I don't want that...) |
Okay I see what you are saying. If you have a look here you'll see that fluxbox 0.9.2 has this feature. Its not stable though. Seems that they are working on it.
|
Sweet, I'm going unstable... Thanks for the link!
Cool |
Yeah, the development version seems to be crashing a lot...
It also have the autogrouping feature disabled. A great feature which I just recently discovered and wouldn't wanna be without. Version 0.1.14 together with the remember-patch seems to have everything I can think of right now. Except for layers and perhaps transparency... :) |
