Take a look at this screenshot; it shows both gaim and Azureus minimized to icons next to the clock, as some such applications do (especially on Windows).
I am trying to find a way for me to 'force' other programs to do the same -- I'm pretty particular about my iconbar space and I don't use the slit. Things like SETI@Home (BOINC), Thunderbird, xChat, the Mozilla Calendar, et cetera; things I have open often but don't need taking up space -- most of these do not have native options to do such (as luckily gaim and Azureus do).
Has anyone been successful in doing something similar?

This is not an iconify issue - it is the system "tray" where some apps designed to provide functionality with a small tray "applet". Only apps designed with a system tray "applet" will display here. Not a Flux expert, but this is my experience...
Sadly I assume nobody has a list of such programs that have a System Tray applet/mode?
Well, it really depends on the developer of the app - whether they decided they needed a tray icon and whatever functionality they decided to add via the tray icon. Gaim has a tray icon, but it's the only app I use that has one...sorry.
I did just discover that someone wrote a SysTray app for Xchat, for the record (it's now mentioned in XChat's FAQ), and there are a few icon themes floating around for it. Doesn't flash on channel messages, sadly, but at least it's something.
