I like Fedoa but I am becoming so frustrated that I am considering alternatives. The frustration stems from what I thought was a basic thing.
I just want to be able to use a floppy disk!!
I think it is a software issue because the actual hardware works in other machines
I have tried sveral new floppy drives, new cables, removing the disk, rebooting then with an without and I get no where.
If I click on "Floppy Drive" under "Computer" on the desktop I get a message
"Unable to Mount Location. Can't mount file"
The floppy drive light comes on, it makes noises and sound likes it is reading the information but no mount indications come up on the desktop and no folder is placed in "Media"
If I click on "Places/Removable Media/Floppy Drive" there are no error messages, the Drive light comes on and it again makes noises as if it is mounting but then nothing.
Has any one come across this and know the fix? Please any assistance would ne most welcome please.
I have searched th web under all sorts of headings but there are indicated of a bug but no fixes that I can find. This has been going on since I first installed FC 10 the day after it was released. I have even tried an updated release of FC10.
Gnome-mount seems to work, and placing the fd0 in fstab works manually. Nothing seems to make the automount system work for teh floppy. the DVD, CD, USB and the cards all mount automatically but not the floppy.
Any I ideas in how to get it working as this is vital to my use.
I have it working well on a FC8 machine so it does work BUT i can not get it to work in FC10.
You can mount it manually and from the fstab but it won't automount? That sounds like a specific problem with the program doing the mounting not linux in general. You may wish to make sure the raw file structure it's using is supported and that you really can access and mount the floppy manually.
have you turned on the " autofs" service ?
when i pop a 3.5 in then click on "computer/floppy" then the error you get BUT then it mounts and a icon shows on my desktop
Yes I can use the floppy if i set it up in fstab and mount it manually. I think I indicated this in the original post.
There is no "autofs" service listed in the services so I do not think it is loaded. I also noticed tonight that ther is also no "fuse' service but 'fuse' is in the installed list.
I understood the autofs was not used in fedora 10.
I can get the floppy to mount if I use gnome-mount /dev/fd0, but if i do a verbose command I get some things that worry me a bit. I see some DEBUG
listings.
if I do a lshal \ grep fd0
I get a listing for a linux path etc and the floppy seems to be accessable.
Quote "when i pop a 3.5 in then click on "computer/floppy" then the error you get BUT then it mounts and a icon shows on my desktop" end quote
I can put in the 3.5 click on Computer/floppy, I get teh error as described then nothing although the disk makwa sounds. There is no folder for disk, floppy or any other name in media or mnt.
I need to get to the bottom of this urgently. Therefore any assistance is greatly appreciated.
