Flightgear simulator advice for newbie
 

I wanna download Flightgear and try to install it. The only experience I have is in downloading and installing my Nvidia driver. Any advice?

They have prebuilt packages here.

If you have
# Download pre-built Slackware packages courtesy of Jon Stockill.
# Download pre-built RedHat 9 packages courtesy of Richard Keech.
# Download pre-built Mandrake packages courtesy of Michael Scherer.

One of these, simply download the RPMs and install them. Really, that easy. As root,
rpm -i <rpmname>
or open you software management GUI to install the rpms.

If you don't have any of the above, then a compile is in order. Which distro do you have?

Questions...
Whats the differance between Mandrake and Mandrake Cooker versions?
RPM's and i586....Are i586's the ones that need compiling?
The packages....Are those just the basic program? I mean, there are additions such as terrain and stuff that can be downloaded seperately, right?

i586 should work fine. Don't know the difference between Madrake and Mandrake Cooker. Yes, there are 11 CDs worth of terrain covering the entire world, however, you can download a 10X10 (degrees lattitude and longitude) section of the earth from (Under worldwide scenery from the main menu)

You just click on the section of 'Earth' you want. Get it running first though. :)
As for whether to go with the cooker 9.3 or regular 9.2, tossup? Couldn't say.

FYI. Any RPM that has .src.rpm in the filename is the RPM that required recompiling. i386.rpm,
i586.rpm mean that they are already compiled (against i386 or i586 processors).
Edit: i.e. 386 or above should work, or 586 and above should work :edit
