firstboot broke my sound driver (rh 8)

So I'm running RH 8.0 on a P200 with a sound card. . .

The first time I booted I could detect the sound card with no problem and everything was fine and dandy. I played some music and all was well.

Then firstboot ran (on the third or fourth boot) and broke it. The soundcard detection utility doesn't work, but sndconfig does. The problem is that I have to run sndconfig every time I boot, or it won't get any sound.

The sound card is an ES1371 (the soundblaster variant of the Ensoniq driver).

same thing happeded to a friend with that card... suggest reinstall... that worked for him, altho those cards are pretty dodgey.. dont think the driver is 100%

Also, if the modules.conf doesn't have an entry for the soundcard, I have to run sndconfig twice to get sound out of it.

I recompiled the kernel with the driver in it, but I'm not sure if it's loading on boot. How would I check and/or configure that?
