Firewall.?
Hello all,
Today is the first day I am trying Linux. I am using Mandrake 9.2 I know this my sound stupid but I have to ask. Is there a firewall for Linux? I am using a cable modem but am afraid just in case. Excuse the question as I am new to linux... I still have windows on the brain!! Thanks Brandon |
Linux has firewall capabilities builtin to the kernel per se. You should check out iptables.
Check out this thread that has awesome links to resources: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=45261 And from that list, an iptables tutorial: http://iptables-tutorial.frozentux.n...-tutorial.html |
Hi Brandon, welcome to LQ, and no worries :}
There is ... the actual firewall is called iptables, it's a combination of kernel routines and a user-land application by the same name. And there's numerous graphical frontends if you're afraid of the command-line. I don't know what's shipped with RH, though. Knetfilter, GTK-IPTables, firestarter, GuardDog, to name just a few ... you can find those either on your CD's :} or at http://freshmeat.net [edit] doh, wish I could type faster... damn you, tricky! :D [/edit] Cheers, Tink |

oh, and if you go to the mandrake control center (menu -> Configuration -> Configure your computer) you will find firewall config under "Security -> DrakeFirewall". Mandrake uses Shorewall firewall you can find more info on it at www.shorewall.net. However Mandrake does make some custom configs. You can also use Webmin to configure it if you want to get fancy.
