Firefox v9.0.1 takes forever to open PDF web links

When browsing and I visit a PDF document web link, Firefox and plug-ins take forever to open the document. Can anyone tell me what is going on with this?

Tools --> Add-ons --> Plug-ins reports that I'm using Acrobat Reader v9.4 and it is also current.

Synaptic reports "acroread ..... 9.4.6-enu_Ooneiric1" and
"acroread-common ..... 9.4.6-enu_Ooneiric1"

Disclaimer -- I know there are other browsers. I know that many folks have various reasons for heartburn about Firefox. Please refrain from answers that say, "Use ____ browser instead." That does not help.
If I want help about your ___ browser, I'll ask THAT question instead.

Running Firefix v9.0.1 on Linux Mint-12 with all current patches.

Firefox can be configured to use other programs to display PDFs inline, for instance, it may use the lightweight xpdf. In addition to the fact that if you only want to have a quick look at documents this may very well suffice, changing this option may help to narrow the issue down a bit. I don't have acroread, so I can't test myself, but I'm guessing this could be due to it being just a huge piece of software that takes forever to load.
