Question Firefox URLs with Squid

When I use Firefox with a direct Internet connection, I am able to type things like "linuxquestions" or "hotmail" on the address bar, and upon hitting enter, Firefox does a quick behind-the-scenes Google and takes me to the first result right away. It's a convenient way to get to popular sites.

linuxquestions - would take me to linuxquestions.org

hotmail - would take me to hotmail.com

My problem is that I am now using the Squid proxy server, and when I type shortcuts like that I get a Squid error and am forced to type the whole domain name. For example, if I type "linuxquestions" now, I'll get:

Quote:
While trying to retrieve the URL: http://linuxquestions/

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for linuxquestions

The dnsserver returned:

Name Error: The domain name does not exist.

This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.
How can I make it so that while using Squid I can still use the abbreviated/googled "URLs" I had gotten used to with Firefox?

NOTE: It does still work if I type more than one word in the address bar, for example:

"linux questions" would work even though "linuxquestions" wouldn't.

Squid is thinking the one-word entries are actual URLs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

=)

Since the cache server is doing the dns lookups and not the client it isn't going to be possible. You should be able to predefine the ones that you want in the "No proxy for" box in the browsers proxy configuration. - ie:
linuxquestions, hotmail, localhost

A hostname cannot have spaces so the browser it assumes you are searching.
