Thanks secesh. No, but I did just try <cd $HOME>, <cd firefox-installer> and then <./firefox> in the terminal window. This resulted in starting up Firefox, which I am using now to access this forum. So now that mystery is solved.
ledatica mentioned creating a shortcut for the program on the desktop. Problem is, I do not know how to create a shortcut. Is this a difficult operation? Can someone please walk me through it?

Ok, i suppose that you've installed firefox at "/home/user_name/firefox-installer"
so, rigth click on your desktop, then go to "create", and finally to "link to aplication". And now you're creating a shortcut. In the direction, put: /home/user_name/firefox-installer/firefox
And you are ready, you have created a shortcut to firefox on your desktop
