Firefox start page not right

I'm using Firefox 27.0.1 and Kubuntu 13.10.

I have Firefox configured to display the pages and tabs from the last session when starting. I always stop Firefox by clicking the Close button at the right end of the Title Bar.

The start page displayed is not reliable. Sometimes I get a page that was closed long before the session was closed. If it was a pop-up, there may be no menu bar or address bar.

I recently decided to drop more than a decade of accumulated stuff in ~/.mozilla, including old account information, and started again from scratch. Only the bookmarks were kept. I'm having good fun (not!) trying to configure things the way they were...

As far as I can tell, all permissions are correct.

I have startup issues with firefox. It starts up with the line

"Well, this is Embarrassing!"

I chased firefox devs over this. They really don't get too excited about startup faults. I was told to open 'about:config' in a tab and fix something, but I forget what it was. Plenty of good things in there to tweak.
