Firefox - Script problems

I'm running Firefox on Debian. I changed the default web browser icon on the panel to point to the Firefox script. It works fine, although when I click on it the script runs, then the browser opens, then the script continues to run for a long time before finally closing. This is mostly an annoyance because the script takes up room on the panel (next to the open apps) and the mouse pointer shows the "thinking" icon. Does this sound normal, or is there some tweaking I can do to make the script terminate quicker (or even execute Firefox without using the script)?

I'm having another problem. I wanted to change the browser that gaim uses to open mail when it shows a "new mail" message (the default is Konqueror). In the preferences I changed the "browser" setting to Firefox, and now when I click on the mail notification I get an error message that says:

"Unable to open URL

Error launching "firefox "/tmp/gaimbFOBF5.html"": Failed to execute child process "firefox" (Permission denied)"

Any ideas?
