Firefox Save As

Is there a way to change the default file type to "All files" in the Firefox Save As dialog? If I don't manually set the file type to "All files" it will create a double extension on the saved file. For example, downloading whitepaper.pdf will save as whitepaper.pdf.pdf if the file type is not set as "All files".

I know I can change it manually each time, but that's kind of a nuisance.

Firefox default save as

Two questions:

1 - what version of Firefox are you using?

2 - what is your Linux distribution?

1. I'm running Firefox version 2.0.0.1

2. I'm running Slackware 11

I installed Firefox using the tgz's supplied by official Slackware packages. If any more information is needed just let me know.

Thanks for the reply.

I should also have asked which desktop you are using, Gnome or KDE.

I've had a look at three installs. Firefox 1.5.09 on KDE & Fedora Core 6, FF 1.5.0.9 on Gnome & FC6, and FF 2.0.0.1 on KDE & Suse 10.2. All seem to work as I expect. I right-click on a download link, for say a PDF file, and select "Save link as.." That opens the save as dialogue showing the file name and the name of the last folder used. If I use that it saves the file correctly. If I select "Browse for other folders" I can select a folder, and also change the file type from, say PDF to All Files. It comes up set to PDF in this case, but doesn't add another extension. Setting to All Files makes no difference.

The double extensions sound like a problem in the file manager routine. Does this happen with all types of file? eg does a doc file become file.doc.doc?

I'm running KDE. The double extension happens with all extensions I've tried. whitepaper.doc will become whitepaper.doc.doc unless I remove the original .doc when I save the file. I took a look at the File Manager & File Association settings within the Control Panel, but I didn't see anything that looked suspicious.

Thanks for the help so far .

I've got the Slack 11 CD's and will be installing that on my desktop in a couple of days, so I will be able to test this out.

I don't think it's a Slackware issue, I think it's something with the Firefox settings. I can't seem to put a finger on it, searching doesn't really help as it's not something that you can pin point easily with search queries .
