Firefox Quantum 65.0 no longer blocking auto play

I've used Firefox for years, but with this new release (Firefox Quantum 65.0) the ability to block autoplay seems to have disappeared. The setting for this used to be in Privacy/Security/Permissions, but is no longer shown. This makes sites like:

https://www.tvguide.com/listings/

particularly annoying. Does anyone know if the Firefox team has finally sold out, or is this a bug?

The check box to prevent pop-ups also seems to be ineffective on the same site.

I should mention that I'm using the "Mozilla Firefox for Linux Mint" with Mint 19.1, but I thought all the Mint folks did was add some URLs for their forums and such.

On one of the Firefox support pages, they make reference to a new icon on the URL bar to set preferences for each site, but that doesn't appear on my version.

Any help would be appreciated ...

See here for some options that you can use in about:config. Let us know how it goes.

Well, the settings in the link you provided reduce the annoyance factor considerably, so thanks very much for that.

After using the recommendations on the particular site I mentioned, the pop-ups still appear, but no video appears in them any more and no one begins shouting at me, so that's an improvement. On the other hand, I still have to clear the pop-up to see the text underneath, and I was unable to locate a setting to prevent that.

As for the Firefox settings in about:config, a bit of linguistic love and a reduction in the number of double negatives in the option descriptions would go a long way toward making this easier for simple (but literate) users to grasp.

So, thanks again.

Good to hear. Which setting(s) did you change in the end (so that others reading this don't need to search through the link)?

I would suggest also installing uBlock Origin and NoScript (although the latter requires a degree of management). My personal use of these two add-ons reduces web "noise" considerably.

Have you checked "Block pop-up windows" in Privacy & Security->Permissions?

Sorry; I was in a rush:

Here are the settings I changed, and how I set them:

media.autoplay.allow-muted : set to false
media.autoplay.block-event.enabled : set to true
media.autoplay.block-webaudio : set to true
media.autoplay.default : set to 1

The "Block pop-up windows" in Privacy & Security->Permissions is (and has always been) checked on my machines, but it too doesn't seem to have any effect on the TV Guide site; I haven't had a chance to check any other sites yet.

I'll have to look into uBlock Origin and NoScript; I presume those are add-ons.

Thanks again.

They are indeed add-ons.

For the popups, you could try an add-on to see if it has wider coverage than Firefox itself.

I've never tried it, but https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/fir...cker-ultimate/ might do the trick.
