Firefox Password Inheritance

When upgrading an OS, I've found that
re-doing all the passwords used on
various sites, can be a real pain.

Is there any way to pass them along to
a new iteration?

If it's any help, I'm using Firefox 31.0
on kubuntu 12.04.3.

i never re-enter passwords after firefox/dist-upgrade but i am using firefox 30.0 on lubuntu with openbox. i hope that the same as your problem won't happen to me after next upgrade.

what was your method of upgrade?
maybe your .mozilla folder was gone or with changed permissions?

A new install DVD. The old files were there in the backup,
but trying to run the new FF with the old files was a null
program. It didn't even pretend to work. Swaping the
directories back, and FF worked again, but no joy for the
passwords.

khm, have you set persmissions to the right ones?

In upgrading your OS did you keep your home directory unchanged? I think all the settings including passwords would be stored somewhere in the ~/.mozilla folder, right? If so then as long as that folder is unchanged, you should be ok.

That's what I thought, too, but it didn't work out
that way.

I have upgraded my OS a dozen times, each keeping /home "as is" and I have never had an issue with Firefox passwords.
Maybe the new Firefox 31 has a new "feature"?
Maybe the permissions are askew?

If you want to keep them, use a password manager such as KeepPass or Lastpass.

Done. Thanks. I do believe that solves the problem.
