firefox: open source code in separate application

Hi. I'm running Firefox 18.0.1 under Gentoo Gnu/Linux. When I click on a URL to a c++ source code file (*.cpp), Firefox recognizes that it is a C++ source code file, but it doesn't give me the option of opening it in another application (only downloading). Same thing with header files. Does anyone know what setting I adjust and where, in order to change that? I see that there is an Applications tab in Preferences, but there doesn't seem to be an option for adding additional content types.
